When heat-treated in an atmospheric furnace, the surface of the tube acquires an oxide film called “scale.” The scale can be removed by washing it in acid solution. This acid-washing process has the effect of generating on the surface a passivation film (a thin, clear film formed by combination of oxygen from the air with the chrome in the stainless steel), which enhances the tube’s corrosion resistance. Tubes manufactured by this process of heat-treatment in an atmospheric furnace followed by acid washing are called annealed & pickled (AP) tubes.

Smooth, light-reflecting surface
Tubes produced by heat-treatment in a non-oxidizing atmosphere are called bright-annealed (BA) tubes. This type of heat treatment does not generate scale, so no acid-washing is performed. As a result, the surface is smooth with a metallic gloss and affords excellent dimensional accuracy. Passivation treatment generates a delicate passivation film, providing excellent corrosion resistance. These tubes are used in applications where contamination and gas buildup inside the tubes must be avoided.

Ultra-smooth mirror surface
A BA tube can be filled with an electrolytic solution and impressed with direct current. The resulting electrolytic reaction at the anode makes the internal surfaces of the BA tube even smoother and cleaner. The resulting tube is called an electropolished (EP) tube. Iron is easy to electrolyze using electrolytic polishing, so this process precipitates out, or elutes, the iron, leaving a higher concentration of chrome. The result is a passivated film that is firm and stable due to the high chrome concentration. Enriching the surface with chrome further improves corrosion resistance.

Thin-walled, mirror-surfaced tubes with smooth, light-reflecting surfaces
AP and BA tubes are formed by cold drawing. Tubes manufactured by cold rolling are called cold-reduced (CR) tubes.
Rolling offers many advantages. It provides significantly better dimensional accuracy than drawing, for example, and yield loss is low. This technique is used to make thin-walled products as well as special tubes such as titanium tubes. The disadvantage is that this process is exceedingly slow, so production efficiency is quite poor.
